Connect your AI assistant · MCP
Bring your research context
to your AI assistant.
Connect a compatible assistant through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to explore your SciMaps literature projects, retrieve bibliometric results, and request network visualizations.
Read the MCP setup guide on GitHubResearch Context MCP provides read-only access to projects you own using a dedicated agent token. It works with research data already stored in SciMaps and does not modify your projects or fetch additional records.

A few things to know before you begin.
What can I do with SciMaps?
Discover research, organize papers in projects, examine selected-source trends and bibliometric relationships, interpret supported analyses with AI assistance, and explore researcher profiles. The tools directory explains each workflow, its inputs, and its limits.
Can I connect my own AI assistant to SciMaps?
Yes. Research Context MCP lets compatible assistants read your owned projects, retrieve supported analyses, and explicitly request SVG network visualizations. It uses a dedicated agent token and read-only access to data already stored in SciMaps. This connection is separate from built-in AI Insights: your external assistant uses the research context returned by SciMaps. The MCP setup guide on GitHub explains configuration, supported tools, and limits.
How does SciMaps use AI?
The AI Insights tab helps interpret Descriptives, Co-authorship, Keyword Co-occurrence, Co-citation, Bibliographic Coupling, and Direct Citation analyses. Selected Paper Insights can also provide optional AI context through Show rationale, and supported reports can include an Analysis Insights section. Availability depends on configured services. Review generated text against the underlying sources and computed results; suggested connections and research directions are not verified discoveries.
Where does the research data come from?
SciMaps searches locally stored research records and uses OpenAlex to find or enrich papers, researchers, institutions and journals when needed. Some records have incomplete author, reference, keyword or affiliation data. Check source details and the scope of each result when interpreting an analysis.
Does an analysis describe all research in a field?
No. A project analysis describes the sources you select and the metadata available for those sources. Selection, missing records, and method settings affect the result. The tool pages explain what each method measures and where interpretation requires care.
